Our first award-winning collaboration!

Excited to be able to finally share this! Almost exactly a year ago, my artist partner Agnieszka Rowińska and I won the Creative Filmmaking Award at the Syrp Everyday Humans Short Film Competition for our very first collaboration, a profile on her that we made at Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. It features my video and time-lapse work alongside her art and animations, along with music from fellow resident, American composer Jason Richmond. You can watch it below:

Since then, Agnieszka and I have collaborated on numerous other projects, including more short films, an installation, and a photography series. We now call ourselves Kometa—check out some of our other work here!

A Day in the Life of a Creative Solopreneur: Christine Herrin of Everyday Explorers Co.

This week I hang out in Manila with Christine Herrin, a graphic designer, hand letterer, and the creative entrepreneur behind the Everyday Explorers Co.! She also happens to be one of my oldest and closest friends. I visit her in her studio in Escolta and we chat about the life of a working artist and solopreneur.

Hope you enjoy this new in-the-city episode and that it provided you with some useful insight!

Shooting the Supermoon! (with no moon)

No super blood wolf moon in the Philippines, but a supermoon is always worth shooting for! Today Angelo and I rendezvous in Quezon City and try to figure out if we can find a good spot to catch what could be an epic full moonrise despite the very cloudy conditions.

EXPOSURE STACKING for Mobile Phone Astrophotography

Using Starry Landscape Stacker to see if I can improve the quality of my mobile landscape astrophotography! Watch to see the result.

I HIGHLY recommend you watch this in 4K on your computer! It's hard to see the details on a mobile phone.

I shot 11 images at f/2.0, 32s, ISO 3200 in RAW using my 2016 Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe and brought these into Lightroom then Starry Landscape Stacker and back into Lightroom.

Is Travel a Good Investment? (Royal Air Inaugural Boracay flight!)

On today’s vlog, I join Royal Air's inaugural flight from Clark Airport to Caticlan Airport (Boracay)! Along the way, I share some real talk on the results of my decision to invest so much time and money in travel.

I love to fly so it was a treat to be one of the very first to experience this flight. I found Royal Air's 96-seater BAe 146-100 to be comfortable, with more legroom than much larger Airbus A320s operated by other airlines.

Thanks to Royal Air for having me onboard this inaugural flight! For more information or to book flights on Royal Air, visit https://flyroyalair.com/

Shooting Beautiful Landscapes on my iPhone X

This week I’ve made two YouTube videos on my experience with the iPhone X as a photography tool!

The first video talks about how, ever since I upgraded from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone X, I’ve been leaving my Sony A7RII at home more, for reasons including improved image processing, the telephoto lens, 4K video at 24p and 60p, portrait mode, and RAW shooting and editing. If you’re into the more technical side of things and been wondering if you should upgrade from a previous generation iPhone, this is the episode for you!

The second video talks about how my most popular landscape photo on social media this year was shot on an iPhone X and what that unexpected occurrence taught me. In this video I address the issue of the gap that exists between how we regard our work and how the audience receives it by digging into the question: If an iPhone photo that took me seconds to capture and edit is more popular than photos that took so much more effort to shoot and process, does that mean that the effort I put into the latter actually doesn’t matter?

Hope you enjoy and learn something from this week’s twin episodes! The truth is that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed shooting with the iPhone X as compared to my iPhone 6 and have gotten surprisingly good results from it. Check out my current gallery of iPhone X photos below (click on each image to see larger):

A morning in Sagada. iPhone X JPG, telephoto lens.

The Straight Life Path is a Lie, Don't Feel Bad If You're Not On It

Most of us have been told to live life in a certain way, but the truth is that there are so many ways to live a good life.

This is another short, off-the-cuff episode where I talk about how the straight life path most of us are expected to follow can become a source of unnecessary angst that hinders you from fully living the kind of life you choose. I cite another passage from Getting There: A Book of Mentors that many of my Instagram followers responded to a few days ago that shares the words of Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Company.
